Maja Gadzińska is a graduate of the Danuta Baduszkowa Vocal and Acting School in Gdynia. She has a three-octave vocal range. Born in Grudziądz, she grew up in Gdynia, where she received her dream education. She has performed at the Musical Theatre in Gdynia in ‘Cud albo Krakowiaki i Górale’ (The Miracle, or Cracovians and Highlanders) as Basia; in 'Notre Dame de Paris’ where she played the unforgettable role of Esmeralda; in ‘Ghost’ where she played Molly; and in ‘Zły’ (Bad), where we could get to know her as Marta Majewska. She also appeared in ‘Szwoleżerzy’ (Light Horsemen), ‘Tuwim dla dzieci’ (Tuwim for Children), ‘Różowy młynek’ (Pink Mill) and ‘Grease’. Now it is time to take on a completely new role - the Ambassadress of the Gdynia Centenary celebrations.
What does the title of the Ambassadress of the Gdynia Centenary mean to you personally?
It is, of course, a great distinction and honour, but also an extraordinary gift from Gdynia to me, as a resident. It is an opportunity to work for the city, to get involved in numerous initiatives and, above all, to meet people.
What place in Gdynia do you find unique and why?
My favourite place in Gdynia is still the beach and forest in Babie Doły. I have lived in this district for almost 20 years and I know every nook and cranny of it. As a diver, I had the opportunity to explore the secrets hidden under the water near the Torpedo Launcher. I would love to go back there, because I feel that there are still many underwater mysteries to be discovered.
What role has Gdynia played in your personal and artistic life?
I was born in Grudziądz, but I moved to Gdynia with my family before I was one year old. Gdynia welcomed us and became our home. I completed all stages of my education here, developed my passions, competed in sports and made friends. In Gdynia, I graduated from the school of my dreams, the Danuta Baduszkowa Vocal and Acting School where I gained my dreamed-of profession, and now I have the honour of working in the largest musical theatre in Poland. So I can safely say that I wouldn't be here without Gdynia.
If you had to describe Gdynia with one sound, movement or emotion, what would it be?
The words ‘breath’ or ‘air’ come to mind. We have beautiful, wide open spaces in the city, a breath of fresh air from the sea, and forests being the city's green lungs. Here, you can relax, catch your breath, but also fill your sails with wind. And let's be honest – sometimes it's really windy in Gdynia.
What message would you like to convey to Gdynia and its residents on the occasion of the city's 100th anniversary?
Let us be kind, understanding and supportive to each another. Let us appreciate what we have. That is the key to happiness.
What can viewers expect at the event specially prepared by the Musical Theatre?
It will be a real party for our birthday girl, Gdynia! After all, she is the most important one. But there will also be a sentimental journey through time, recalling the most important moments for our city. All this will be told through music, movement and light. And, of course, performed by the most wonderful ensemble under the sun.
Thank you for the interview.
