The debate of rectors 'Gdynia! The Choice for Today. The City for Tomorrow' will open a series of lectures on the centenary of Gdynia

Gdynia's universities and the local government join forces on the city's 100th anniversary. During the series of meetings that will take place at universities throughout the year of the anniversary celebrations, the residents can join lectures and talks. The robust schedule includes lectures on maritime issues, as well as humane, security, business, psychology, and history issues, and the topic of the future of Gdynia. The initiative of academic contribution to the anniversary is intensively supported by the local government. On 19 February, the inaugural meeting will start with a debate in the Pomeranian Science and Technology Park in Gdynia, entitled 'Gdynia! The Choice for Today. The City for Tomorrow.'

The local government and the universities in Gdynia are strengthening their cooperation.

Gdynia has been developing for a hundred years thanks to courage, knowledge and cooperation. We want this anniversary to be an opportunity not only to celebrate, but also to think together about how to plan the future of the city wisely. The academic community is one of our most important partners in this process, and the voice of the residents is an indispensable element of this conversation – emphasises the Mayor of Gdynia Aleksandra Kosiorek.

The preparations took many months and brought the expected effect. The first meeting starting the series of lectures will begin with an inaugural debate in the Pomeranian Science and Technology Park in Gdynia. The event 'Gdynia! The Choice for Today. The City for Tomorrow', will be joined by the rectors of all universities in Gdynia: Rear Admiral Prof. Tomasz Szubrycht, Dr. Hab., Rector-Commander of the Naval Academy in Gdynia; Prof. Adam Weintrit, Dr. Eng., Master Mariner, Rector of the Maritime University of Gdynia; Prof. Artur Kozłowski, Dr. Hab., Vice-Rector of UWSB Merito; and Tomasz Białas, PhD, Rector of the Higher School of Administration and Business in Gdynia.

The debate will take the form of a moderated discussion with the audience. The meeting will be opened by the Mayor of Gdynia, Aleksandra Kosiorek.

The programme has been divided into four thematic blocks:

  • 'Gdynia – My City' – personal perspective of the rectors and their relationship with the city,
  • 'Gdynia in the Face of a Changing World' – a conversation about security, innovation, maritime economy and geopolitical challenges,
  • 'Gdynia – the Next 100 Years' – a vision of the city's future, development opportunities and threats,
  • Questions from the audience – an open discussion with the participation of the residents.

 The meeting will open a series of lectures on the 100th anniversary of Gdynia. Each university will hold lectures every Thursday at 6 PM.

The schedule will include, among others:

  • 5 March, Higher School of Administration and Business in Gdynia – 'Secrets of Scandinavia in Gdynia – Swedish, Norwegian and Danish Traces in Our City", led by Maciej Zborowski, PhD,
  • 12 March, Merito – 'How to Become a Centenarian (not only in Gdynia...), or Is It Possible to Cheat Time?", led by Anna Mikosik-Roczyńska,
  • 19 March, Merito – 'Is Sport for Health or Health for Sport? Psychological Perspective', led by Prof. Mariusz Lipowski, Dr. Hab.,
  • 26 March, Naval Academy – 'Gdynia Safe for 100 Years: the Evolution of Civil Protection and Civil Defense in the Port City of the Future", led by: Paweł Kępka, Dr. Hab, Professor at the Naval Academy, Martyna Bartkowska, PhD,
  • 9 April, Maritime University in Gdynia – 'The Baltic Sea – Our Sea. What Is Really Hidden in the Waters at the Gates of Gdynia?", led by Magdalena Bogalecka, Dr. Hab., Professor of the Maritime Unversity in Gdynia.
