As part of the anniversary celebrations, an extraordinary documentary film entitled ‘Gdynia na taśmie’ (‘Gdynia on film’) will be made by students and graduates of the Gdynia Film School. It will not be a classic anniversary story – instead of a tribute, we will see a picture of a city that speaks for itself through its rhythm, light and everyday life.
The film will be shot on 8 and 16 mm film – an analogue medium which, thanks to its noble imperfection, will give the images a unique character. This is a conscious and artistic choice: different from digital perfection, evoking the atmosphere of old cinematography and allowing us to look at Gdynia in a fresh and non-obvious way.
What will ‘Gdynia on Film’ be like?
Composed of long, static shots, in which each frame becomes a separate scene and a separate view, subtle and reflective – showing the everyday life of the city, its architecture, light and inhabitants, poetic – focusing on details, elusiveness and the rhythm of life, which often slip away in the daily rush.
The aim of the ‘Gdynia on film’ project is to capture the mosaic of urban reality – a collection of images that together will tell the story of the atmosphere and diversity of Gdynia. It will be an atmospheric film, full of silence and observation, allowing viewers to see familiar places from a completely new perspective.
The voice of young artists
The project is being carried out by young filmmakers associated with the Gdynia Film School – people who look at the city with artistic sensitivity, tenderness towards analogue images and curiosity to discover what is ordinary, but at the same time extraordinary.
‘Gdynia on film’ will be a celebration of a city where everyday life intertwines with the magic of cinema, and tradition with modernity. It is an invitation to pause for a moment and look at Gdynia differently – through the eyes of young artists who give voice not to themselves, but to the city itself.
